Mazda has announced its newest anti-collision safety technology, the ‘Smart City Brake Support’ (SCBS). The SCBS system, fitted as standard on the Mazda CX-5, uses a laser sensor to detect a vehicle or any other obstacle in front of the SUV. If the system detects a possible collision and the driver fails to slow down appropriately or turn the wheel to avoid the crash, the SCBS automatically activates the brakes and cuts the engine yield at the same time. This allows the system to help avoid collisions or if not, mitigate the damage from rear-end collisions at low speeds, which is one of the most common accidents. With the car moving low speeds of between 2.5 and 19mph, the laser sensor installed at the top of the windscreen detects an obstacle in front of the Mazda CX-5 and monitors the space as well as the closing speed. If the SCBS determines that there is a high risk of a collision and the driver takes no breaking or avoiding action, the system pre-pressures the braking system. This allows a faster braking response when the driver hits the brakes. And if the driver fails to perform any braking or avoiding action, the SCBS will activate the automatic braking operation.

The SCBS system only works when the speed difference between the driver’s car and the vehicle in front is less than 19mph. Mazda Motor Corp. is determined to intensify its safety-related research and development efforts, with hopes of achieving the ultimate goal of having an accident-free and safe motorized society. After the Mazda CX-5, the company will install the SCBS in its future new models.

Rudest Nations

The World's Rudest Nations for Travelers

The travel search site surveyed its users about where the locals never smile and people are particularly unfriendly, and the nation with the most votes for rudest locals was…

Wait for it…

France (félicitations, mes amis!), followed by Russia. The survey received over 1,200 responses, 65 percent from the UK and Ireland, plus elsewhere in Europe, North America and Australia.

The World's Rudest Nations for Travelers 1. France 2. Russia 3. United Kingdom 4. Germany 5. Other

Rounding out the top five rudest countries were the U.K., Germany and “Other” (those Others are the worst, don’t you think?). The U.S. placed 7th, behind China.

Some of the perceived rudeness may be attributable to cultural differences rather than anything intentional. For example, says Tatiana Danilova, Skyscanner’s Russian Market Manager, “the Russian language is not as polite as English, so when Russians translate directly from Russian to English, it can sound rude to an English speaker even if they don’t mean it to.”

“We were surprised to see Russians come in second place,” says Skyscanner’s Travel Editor, Sam Baldwin. He attributes this in part to the “familiarity breeds contempt” phenomenon. Although Russia doesn’t compare with the Mediterranean as a tourist destination, as visa regulations have relaxed, Russian holidaymakers are increasingly flocking to the Mediterranean and coming into contact with people from other countries.

The same principle may apply to the French: “As our closest neighbors, there has long been a familiar rivalry between the U.K. and France,” Baldwin says, and the preponderance of responses from the British Isles may have contributed to this result. Still, Baldwin says, “Even the French acknowledge that the way they are perceived is not entirely without basis.” (In France’s defense, I’ve always found Parisians to be just as rude to each other as they are to foreigners. Outside of Paris – and even within the city – people can be as gracious as anywhere.)

The British, for their part, voted themselves “world’s worst tourists” in a previous Skyscanner survey.

The countries rated as having the least rude locals were Brazil, the Caribbean and the Philippines.

Skyscanner claims to be Europe’s leading travel search site, operating in over 25 languages with more than 25 million visits and over 11 million unique visitors per month. It has offices in Edinburgh, Scotland and Singapore.

Here's the complete list of responses and their percentage of votes:

Apart from that, the iPad 3 will have a lighter battery life, reducing the weight of the tablet. However, the battery is reported to cost 20 to 30 percent more than the current iPad’s battery, which will also have a longer battery life.

Chip maker Nvidia says that smartphones featuring its quad-core Tegra 3 processors may arrive in the first half of 2012. Meanwhile, Qualcomm indicates that its quad-core Snapdragon will make its appearance in Windows 8 tablets in the second half of 2012.
Some of the features that a quad-core smartphone would offer are:

Top Gadgets of 2012

It is expected that Facebook might start rolling out the feature to its users starting January, 2012.

PlayStation Vita

With the huge success of PlayStation Portable selling over 71.4 million units worldwide, Sony is all set to release the next version of the PSP called as the PS Vita. The gaming console packs a quad-core graphics processor, which is even impressive than the iPad 2. It looks quite similar to the PSP, however without any doubt the Vita is more impressive and elegantly designed. It sports a 5-inch OLED multi-touch capacitive touchscreen, 24-bit color with a resolution of 960 × 540 qHD and has pixel density of 220 ppi.

Best 2012 Gadgets

Wii U

In competition to Sony’s PlayStation Vita, Nintendo is set to release the next version of its gaming console called Wii U, which is the direct successor to the Wii. Nintendo unveiled the Wii U in it’s press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2011 on June 7, 2011.

Wii U
It is the first console from Nintendo to produce 1080p high-definition graphics, featuring a new controller with an embedded touchscreen. Nintendo showcased a prototype version of Wii U, which features a touch screen over 6 inches wide and contains a built-in microphone, speakers, gyroscope, accelerometer, rumble and camera.

The Nintendo Wii U will also feature internal flash based memory for media storage and game save data, however the system will also support external SD card and USB HDD support allowing users to expand storage capacity. It is expected to be released sometime after March 2012.

Apple HD TV – Upcoming 2012 Gadgets

Speculations around the Internet indicate that Apple is preparing to release a high-definition television set. The TV is expected to come in 15 to 19-inch range powered by the company’s mobile operation system, iOS. The TV, however, is not only used to play videos, but also play games, run applications and providing you control over social networking sites, like Twitter, Facebook and Google+. It seems that dish satellite television will one day be extinct.
Apple had launched Apple TV, a set-up box used for streaming video to a television, which was first released on January 9, 2007.
It is expected that such a TV set from Apple would be available in time for the 2012 holiday season.

Samsung Galaxy S3

After having a huge success with the Samsung Galaxy S2, it is rumored that Samsung has been busy working on the next version of the smartphone Samsung Galaxy S3. It is expected that the device will feature a Samsung Exynos 4212 processor clocked at 1.8GHz and an ARM Cortex A9 chip, which will offer a 25% performance boost and a 30% reduction in power consumption.
It is also expected that the Galaxy S3 will most probably be powered by Google’s latest OS – Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Rumors indicate that Samsung may unveil Galaxy S3 at a similar time to the iPhone 5.

16 dead in Malaysia orphanage landslide
The death toll from a landslide caused by heavy rains that hit a Malaysian orphanage has risen to 16, police said Sunday, announcing the search operation was over.
The incident took place at around 2:30 pm (0630 GMT) Saturday at the Children's Hidayah Madrasah Al-Taqwa orphanage in Hulu Langat, just south of the capital Kuala Lumpur.
A policeman at the scene said 16 bodies had been recovered, including a 34-year-old caretaker. The ages of the others killed ranged from eight to 19 years old.
"The search and rescue operation is over. We have completed our mission," said a police officer at the scene, who did not want to be named.
Villager Mohamad Azam, 38, said: "The last four bodies were taken out at about 5:30 am.
"I know some of the boys. They are very good boys. They recite their prayers early in the morning every day."
Ten people remain in hospital.
Landslides are regular natural disasters in Malaysia and the government has imposed strict rules with regards to hillside development.
In one of the country's worst landslips, a huge mudslide brought on by heavy rain triggered the collapse of a 12-storey residential building on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur in December 1993, killing 48 people.

Orphanage built without approval

“Back then, the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) did not have jurisdiction over this area, so we cannot blame residents who built houses in the area.
“They have the right to build homes for themselves and their families,” he told reporters after inspecting the orphanage-cum-religious school here yesterday.
“The orphanage was built about 15 years ago and at that time or now, it was not compulsory for them to meet requirements set by JKR.
“But I do hope that those who want to build on hillslopes in such areas will get the green light from the Government,” said Chor who noted that the structure was built on agriculture land.
Chor also expressed his gratitude to the rescue teams comprising more than 700 people for their immediate action in rescuing victims buried by the landslide.
Earlier, Selangor executive councillor Ronnie Liu said the orphanage was not registered under MPKj.
“It (the orphanage) is out of our operational zone and should come under the Rural and Regional Development Ministry. We were not aware of its existence. There is no record of an application,” he told reporters.
Liu said the foundation of the building was built on a slope of more than 80 degrees with no retaining wall.
He said no local authority would have approved such a structure if they had received the application.
He said the MPKj president would meet with the owner of the building to find out more about its foundation.
“If the foundation is unstable, the building will be demolished as it would be too dangerous to occupy,” Liu said, adding that they had located the owner but he was too shocked to say anything.
Public Works Department (JKR) slope engineering branch director Datuk Dr Ashaari Mohamad said initial investigation by experts revealed that the slope was sandy and prone to erosion.
“We will have a meeting with the relevant agencies including the Geology Department and Meteorology Department today,” he said.

e-Book sales surpass printed books

E-READING: A man reading a e-book on the Kindle in this May 2010 photo. Since April 1, Amazon has sold 105 e-books for every 100 printed books. - AP
NEW YORK: Inc said that after less than four years of selling electronic books, it's now selling more of them than printed books.
The online retailer said that since April 1, it has sold 105 e-books for every 100 printed books, including printed books for which there is no electronic edition.
The comparison excludes free e-books, which would tip the scales further if they were included.
Printed books include both hardcover and paperback books. Amazon said in July that e-book sales had outstripped hardcover sales. It's now selling three times as many e-books as it did a year ago.
Analysts estimate that Amazon accounts for about two-thirds of US e-book sales.
Amazon also said the latest and cheapest version of its Kindle e-book reading device is the best-seller of the line, five weeks after it was introduced.
The Kindle with Special Offers costs US$114 (RM342), and shows ads in standby mode. - AP

Govts must never block Web access

FULL ACCESS: The United Nation's independent expert on freedom of speech says governments that cut users' access to the Internet are violating a basic human right. - AP
GENEVA: The United Nation's (UN) independent expert on freedom of speech says governments that cut users' access to the Internet are violating a basic human right "regardless of the justification provided."
Frank La Rue says blocking Net access is "disproportionate," whether it is a blanket ban imposed during times of political unrest or against individuals for violating specific laws.
Britain last year announced it planned to follow France's lead to cut off Internet access to people who illegally download copyright-protected material.
La Rue's report also urges governments to decriminalise all forms of defamation and ensure Internet users can express themselves anonymously.
The report will be discussed by the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva next month. - AP

Racing through the Apocalypse

Recklessly race through a devastated city against equally crazy drivers in MotorStorm 3: Apocalypse.
SPONTANEOUS URBAN RESTRUCTURING: Yes, the pretty concept art of the devastated city will make you go "oooh," but when you're actually racing through collapsing highways and exploding buildings your reaction will be more like "aaahhh."
WE'LL say this straight out: The fictional events portrayed in MotorStorm 3: Apocalypse have certain unfortunate and unintended similarities to recent global disasters.
In fact, Sony delayed the release of the game in a few countries out of respect but we hope the unfortunate coincidences in the storyline won't detract players from enjoying this game.
Now we've got that off our chest, let's continue with the review.
Say you happen to be in a coastal city that's in the throes of not one but several natural disasters. Earthquakes have all but destroyed the downtown area, fires from the aftershocks are spreading across neighbourhoods and - oh look - there's a hurricane heading in your direction. What would you do?
If you said "have a reckless race on a variety of vehicles through the burning debris of the devastated urban landscape," then congratulations! You are both certifiably insane and a perfect racing candidate for Apocalypse.
